ATFS-1 regulates expression of several functional categories of genes, besides mitochondrial chaperones and proteases. (A) ATFS-1 regulates expression of at least 292 genes during mitochondrial stress. These include a multitude of cytochrome P450 enzymes, kinases, and nuclear hormone transcription factors, among others. Based on data from Nargund et al.¹⁵ (B) The UPR^mt appears to be highly conserved between mammals and worms with respect to target genes that function as mitochondrial chaperones, proteases, and protein import machinery.
