The Sec within SelK may undergo palmitoylation as an additional step in the transfer of palmitic acid from palmitoyl-CoA to the target protein. The Sec of SelK may be more effective at capturing the palmitate moiety, thereby reducing energy of the first step in the palmitoylation reaction. The palmitoyl group may then be transferred from either the Sec or Cys to the target protein.
