Quality assessment of the 27 included studies using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, which assess three main groups of criteria consisting of a total of eight items. All criteria are assessed in a binary fashion (0 or 1), except for ‘comparability of cases/controls’, which was scored as 0, 1 or 2.
