Colonization of germfree mice. Mice were orally inoculated with approximately 10⁶ CFU/ml of PA2 in the monoculture control. In the coculture experiment, germfree mice were precolonized with C600, followed by inoculation with PA2 7 days later. Fecal cell counts for PA2 (A) and C600 (B) are reported for day 1 and day 6 postinoculation (pi or PI) with strain PA2. The medians are indicated by the horizontal lines. The detection limit for plate counts was approximately 100 to 1,000 CFU/ml.
