a

HIV-serodiscordant partners include those who were known to be of a different HIV status as well as those in which HIV status disclosure did not occurr, or status was assumed (but without disclosure)

b

Note that the number of anal sex acts was a non-normally distributed variable. As such, we report the median (instead of mean) which is less apt to influence by outliers. The values of median values of zero for anal sexual behaviors reflect the fact that for many variables, greater than 50% of the sample said they had not engaged in the behavior. however, it could also mean that as much as 49% of the sample did engage in the behavior. Given that participants were asked about 12 different behaviors, it is reasonable that, as an aggregate, the median value would be 8.
