The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s Five Essential Skill

  1. Self-awareness: recognizing one’s emotions and values, and being able to realistically assess one’s strengths and limitations.

  2. Self-management: being able to set and achieve goals, and handling one’s own emotions so that they facilitate rather than interfere with relevant tasks.

  3. Social awareness: showing understanding and empathy for the perspective and feelings of others.

  4. Relationship skills: establishing and maintaining healthy relationships, working effectively in groups as both leader and team member, and dealing constructively with conflict.

  5. Responsible decision making and problem solving: making ethical, constructive choices about personal and social behavior.
