Indications for the transfusion of platelet concentrates.

  • - Platelet count <30×109/L - Consider a transfusion in all cases.

  • - Platelet count 30–49×109/L - Consider a transfusion in the following cases:

    • in the first week of life in neonates weighing ≤1,000 g at birth;

    • prior grade 3 intraventricular haemorrhage/intraparenchymal bleeding (in preceding 48–72 h);

    • concomitant coagulopathy;

    • critically ill neonate (with sepsis or fluctuating systemic blood pressure);

    • during invasive procedures.

  • - Platelet count 50–99×109/L in neonates with bleeding.

  • - Do not transfuse if the platelet count ≥100×109/L.
