The central canal of the spinal cord is considered a neurogenic niche in rodents. Using MRI, Garcia-Ovejero et al. show that this structure is absent in adult humans, both in controls and in patients with spinal cord injury. Histology and gene expression profiling instead reveal features reminiscent of low-grade ependymoma.
