Relationship between the mathematical model and the experimental system. (a) The region of interest in experimental images. (b) Schematic of the cornea micropocket assay, on which our mathematical model is based. Tips are assumed to migrate (and thus vessels grow), on average, in the direction of increasing AF concentration, i.e. towards the pellet(s). For simplicity, we formulate our model in terms of dependent variables which represent quantities averaged in the plane perpendicular to the average direction of tip motion. Both VEGF-A165 and bFGF pellets are assumed to be located at x = L.
