(A) Average numbers of macroscopic tumors per mouse in the proximal and distal colon were determined at the time of euthanasia with a stereomicroscope. Macroscopic tumors (shown in B) were confirmed by histological analysis by an unbiased pathologist (not shown). The average number of macroscopic tumors per mouse for the AOM/Il10−/− mice is underestimated, since two mice in this group had a high tumor burden classified as “too many to count” (above 10 tumors, numerous and small) and were assigned an arbitrary number of “10” for the purposes of calculation.
