Fig 5 — (A) Phagocytosis of apoptotic 16HBE airway epithelial cells (AEC) by alveolar macrophages from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) subjects and controls. Compared to alveolar macrophages from healthy controls, macrophages from COPD patients had a significantly reduced ability to phagocytose apoptotic 16HBE epithelial cells (*p<0.05 vs control). (B) Correlation between the relative mRNA expression of SPHK1 and % efferocytosis. There was a significant correlation between efferocytosis and mRNA expression of SPHK1 (p<0.05). The correlation coefficients are listed in the results.
