Exposure to metronidazole and vancomycin affects the colonization ability of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli. Mice were treated with indicated antibiotics for 3 days and then allowed to recover. After cessation of antibiotics, mice were challenged with approximately 50 000 colony-forming units (CFUs) of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (A), carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (B), or E. coli (C). Fecal pellets were collected from mice 24 hours after infection and assessed for the corresponding pathogen burden. *P < .05, P < .01.
