Microscopic observation of the contralateral non-damaged side of the brain at each time-point via hematoxylin and eosin staining. (A) Cellular structure was normal after 1 h. (B) After 6 h, glial cells were swollen and the color of the cytoplasm was light following staining, exhibiting intracellular edema and a loose cytoplasm (black arrow). (C) After 24 h, composite brain edema occurred, with intracellular edema in dominance (black arrow). (D) After 48 h, intracellular edema persisted and vasogenic edema was alleviated (black arrow).
