Illustration of the kinematic model (Bottom) developed to represent the N. gracilis lid (Top). The lid was modeled as a rectangular prism rotating about a fulcrum (F). The angle of displacement (θ) was measured by averaging the angles of displacement of the proximal, medial, and distal point on each leaf. Each angle was calculated by taking the inverse tangent of the displacements (Dp, Dm, and Dd for the proximal, medial, and distal point, respectively) divided by the distance of that point from the fulcrum (Lp, Lm, and Ld). Individual angle measurements had small errors that were smoothed out by averaging the three measurements.
