White background: species analyzed in the article. Gray background: species used for comparison or quoted for reference; n.d., not determined. Biological data on Tt, Sc, and Dd are referred to Mediterranean specimens and taken from Cagnolaro et al. (2015); biological data on Sl, Sa, and La are referred to oceanic specimens and taken from Jefferson et al. (2015); brain weights of all species except Stenella longirostris are taken from Pilleri and Gihr (1970), and limited only to non-perfused brains of adult specimens (Tt: longer than 200 cm; Sl = Stenella styx and Dd:>170 cm). Brain weight of Stenella longirostris is taken from Hof et al. (2005). Weight of newborn brain of Tt and Dd are taken from Ridgway (1986); brain weight of newborn Sc is taken from Pirlot and Kamiya (1982) after authors’ correction for formalin fixation.
