Following floral initiation in cauliflower (var. botrytis) arrested development leads to proliferation of vegetative and inflorescence meristems, whereas in broccoli (var. italica) development is arrested at the later floral bud stage. (C) Each developmental phase may have a distinct cardinal temperature associated with an optimal rate of growth leading to the subsequent transition.
