Spiral ganglion cell density (cells/10,000 μm2) across the apex, middle, and basal turns of the cochlea for 5 +/+, 4 +/Slc44a2 Δ, and 7 Slc44a2 Δ/Δ animals. SGCs were intact for +/+ mice at all regions. The apical and basal parts of the spiral ganglion of Slc44a2 Δ/Δ mice showed extensive loss of cells, while +/ Slc44a2 Δ mice demonstrated density loss only at the base.
