The scale from left to right represents the approximate time (in years) to the expected onset of clinical symptoms. All SPM clusters shown are significant at p < 0.001 (uncorrected). The figure demonstrates the progressive and heterogeneous nature of Alzheimer’s disease pathology as the expected onset of clinical symptoms approaches; neocortical fibrillar Aβ increases (PIB retention, top two rows), astrocytosis decreases (DED binding, middle two rows), glucose metabolism decreases (FDG hypometabolism shown, bottom two rows).
