Guinea pigs or ferrets were inoculated i.n. with 106 EID50 of r-P15 virus (a,b, n = 6), SD2/H9N2 virus (c,d, n = 3), or XD/H1N1 virus (n = 3). Twenty-four hours later, a naïve contact animal was placed in a cage adjacent to each inoculated animal. Nasal washes were collected every two days from all animals beginning 2 days post-infection for detection of virus shedding. Each line represents the virus titer from an individual animal. The dashed lines indicate the lower limit of detection.
