pcnB deletion mutant bypasses the requirement for prey extract. Approximately 2 × 107 pfu/mL of B. bacteriovorus HD100 AP cells and of B. bacteriovorus HD100 ∆pcnB AP cells were incubated separately for 24 h with ghost cells and prey extract [G(H)+E], with ghosts and PYE medium [G(H)+P], or with prey extract alone (E). The number of progeny was determined by viable counts. In contrast to the WT strain that was unable to proliferate, the ∆pcnB mutant replicated when cultured with ghost cells and PYE medium. Values are averages of three independent experiments, each performed in triplicate. Error bars indicate SE.
