From top to bottom, this figure shows sagittal and axial views and a 3D rendered segmentation of the brain and the hyperintensity radial bands of white matter abnormalities on (a) SRR image, (b) resampled axial FSE, and (c) resampled coronal FSE scans. The circles and squares highlight some of the differences between images due to partial volume effects in the slice select direction. Collectively visual comparison shows that thin structures can be easily obscured and overlooked in thick-slice FSE scans, but are better delineated in 3D using SRR by fusing thick-slice scans. The 3D rendering also shows how some radial lines were missed and some were visualized on the axial and coronal scans in (b) and (c), but were generally better segmented and visualized on the 3D rendered SRR image (a). The circles on the 3D rendered images highlight some of the structures that were missed or mixed due to partial voluming.
