Wildtype mice were treated with simvastatin (20 mg/kg, IP injection) or vehicle 16 h prior to being subjected to VILI challenge (V_T =  40 ml/kg, 4 h). Spontaneously breathing mice were used as controls. BAL fluid was then collected and analyzed for (A) protein content and (B) total cell counts (*p < 0.05, n = 3 animals/condition).
