Growth of graphene on Ni(111) can be followed by monitoring the first order diffraction peak while dosing ethene (C2H4). Here the time t = 0 on the abscissa corresponds to starting the dosing of ethene. First nickel carbide forms and the intensity drops. As soon as this converts to graphene, the intensity increases since graphene exhibits a larger corrugation than Ni(111). The whole growth process continues over several hours.
