The upper panel shows superposition of the 3 currently available alphavirus nsP2 protease active sites. Tan color ribbon is CHIKV nsP2 (PDB ID: 3TRK), blue ribbon is VEEV nsP2 (PDB ID: 2HWK) and purple ribbon is SINV nsP2 (PDB ID: 4GUA). The lower panel shows the active site of papain (PDB ID: 9PAP). Molecular graphics and analyses were performed with the UCSF Chimera package.
