PD-1 inhibits sarcoidosis cellular proliferation. High antigenic loads induce PD-1 up-regulation, which alters cell cycle progression. Cell cycle progression is necessary for normal CD4+ T-cell proliferation to clear microbial or autoantigens, thus leading to clinical resolution. Persistent antigen further PD-1 up-regulation and loss of cellular function.
