L. laevis explants are amenable to animal cap explant culture. Untreated animal caps from X. laevis (A) or L. laevis (B) heal into balls of ciliated epidermis. In contrast, treatment of freshly microdissected caps with activin results in significant elongation of dissected tissue in both X. laevis (C) and L. laevis (D).
