Rice seeds were germinated in trays over a period of 2 d and then transferred to plant culture dishes containing 0.6% Phytagel™ media. Culture dishes were divided into three 5-cm segments; the upper and lower segments were supplemented with 0.2 mM NH4+, and the middle segment was supplemented with 0.2 mM NO3.
