Effects of PYC on atherosclerotic plaques and lipid levels. Following the construction of an atherosclerotic ApoE−/− mouse model induced by LPS and a high-fat diet, PYC (0.15 mg kg−1) was administered orally once a day after LPS treatment. Twelve weeks later, sections of the aorta were analyzed by H&E staining (a). Immunohistochemical analysis of macrophage antigen (MOMA)-2 was performed to evaluate the macrophage numbers (b). Oil Red O was used to examine the lipid accumulation in plaques (c, d). The serum lipid levels were also measured, including total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) (e). *P<0.05.
