In 1936, Bethune was invited to Memphis to give a lecture on “Advances in Anesthesia for Thoracic Surgery” to a very conservative group, the Mid South Medical Assembly. After his talk on spinal anesthesia, Bethune presented, unannounced, his thoughts on socialized medicine.
