Periodontal disease was induced in wild-type and IKK-DN mice by oral inoculation of bacteria as described in Fig. 1. (ac) Osteoclasts (indicated by arrows) were counted as multi-nucleated cells lining the bone surface in TRAP stained sections. Eroded bone surface was measured as the length of resorption lacunae divided by total bone length in TRAP stained sections. (df) The expression of RANKL by osteoblastic cells, osteocytes and cells in gingival connective tissue was determined by immunofluorescence following the approach described in Fig. 2. *significantly different compared to matched non-infected group (P < 0.05).
