Replacement of the aryl ether of VU573 with a morpholine moiety produces the inactive analog VU342. Positively charged VU590 and VU608 share the same macrocycle core; they differ in the replacement of the 2 nitrobenzyl groups in VU590 with (methylsulfonyl)benzyl groups in VU608.
