Dr Dean,

Thank you for your kind comments about the recent article. Your point is well taken. Even using NHANES estimates of nutrient intake, significant numbers of Americans do not meet the basic RDA/AI levels set for “generally healthy” individuals. As you point out, many Americans eating and living in a “standard” Western way are functionally insufficient in many vital nutrients due to genetics, stress, nutrient-depleting foods and drugs, poor digestion, and much more.

The number of studies showing beneficial supplemental and therapeutic uses of nutrients is too numerous to count. It appears, however, that most vocal members of the editorial boards of prominent medical journals seem to be unaware of much of this research. Unfortunately, the media that reports on health news makes it even more difficult when they sensationalize these stories without the proper context.

Thanks to IMCJ and others, there is still a voice to challenge these biased views of nutrient research.
