The S. japonicum phylogeny was calibrated with the mt genome of S. mekongi, a close relative found exclusively in the Mekong river basin of Laos and Cambodia in South-east Asia. Nodes with high statistical support (>80% approximate likelihood branch support in ML analysis and >0.9 posterior probability in Bayesian analysis, respectively) are highlighted by asterisks. The numbers in brackets indicate the number of identical mt genome sequences obtained. The green circles indicate lake samples, the pink circles indicate samples collected from mountainous areas of mainland China, whereas the coloured triangles represent samples from Chinese Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
