Circulating tumor cells (CTC) are malignant cells found in peripheral blood and their analysis could represent a real-time liquid biopsy. CTC count is prognostic for poor overall survival in metastatic breast cancer. The desired goal of CTC-based assays like CTC-ETI is to guide the selection of treatment of patients with metastatic breast cancer, so that breast cancer-related outcomes are improved.
