Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis Used To Define Symptomatic Newborns (Within 6 Hours of Birth or Within 72 Hours of Birth)

Signs or Symptoms of Sepsis
Fever (≥38°C)
Hypothermia (<35°C)
Hypotension (mean arterial pressure less than gestational age or treated with fluid boluses or pressors)
Respiratory distress (tachypnea for at least 30 minutes documented twice in the medical record)
Cyanosis with use of supplemental oxygen for >60 minutes
Grunting, nasal flaring, or retractions
Tachycardia (heart rate >160 beats per minute)
Apnea and/or intermittent bradycardia
Acidosis (pH <7.25 by cord gas or first blood gas)
Lethargy or irritability documented in the medical record
Abdominal distention or >1 episode of bilious emesis
Hypoglycemia (blood glucose <40 mg/dL)
Neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count <1000/mm3)
Bleeding, petechiae, thrombocytopenia (platelet count <100 000/µL)
