Confocal scanning laser microscope images of model cheeses with two different spatial distributions of bacterial colonies, small-colony (A, C) and big-colony (B, D) cheeses, taken at two different zooms. Ultrafiltered model cheeses were inoculated with Lactococcus lactis. Images were taken after 13 days of incubation. Labeling was obtained by combining SYTO 9 (which labels live bacteria [green]) and propidium iodide (which labels membrane-compromised bacteria [red]) (Live/Dead BacLight labeling).
