Results of pilot screening of the set of compounds active in vitro. Panel A shows the distribution of the MIC ranges of the compounds tested (144 compounds distributed into eight MIC ranges). Panel B shows a comparison of compound potency in broth (extracellular MIC90) with activity in macrophages (intracellular MIC90). The extracellular/intracellular MIC90 ratios of all of the compounds were plotted. Compounds with ratios of >1 have higher activity in macrophages than in vitro, while compounds with ratios of <1 have higher in vitro activity. The 10 compounds with the highest intracellular versus extracellular activity are further described in Table 2.
