Assessment of mitochondrial heteroplasmy for ND5. PCR amplification of the ND5 locus with primers that flank a commonly occurring deletion (ND5∆) produces two amplicons: the shorter deletion-bearing product (∼800 bp) and the intact product (∼1700 bp) (Howe and Denver 2008). The percent of these amplicons represented by ND5∆ products is shown beneath the agarose gel image for the parental strains, five cybrids, and a negative (water) control.
