The drawing from the left shows the localization of axons (punctuation) on the white matter from distinct descending motor pathways, and their terminations on the rexed laminae in the grey matter (shadowed area). The right cartoon represents the same cervical spinal cord segments from an animal with damaged corticospinal and rubrospinal axons. Chondroitinase treatment together with physical rehabilitation enhances branching of undamaged reticulospinal axons, increasing their density in both normal and ectopic termination areas of the grey mater.
