(A) The VapC proteins from Salmonella enterica serovar LT2 and Shigella flexneri 2a virulence plasmid pMYSH6000 were found to cleave the initiator tRNAfMet within its anticodon stem-loop (yellow arrow). (B) Cleavage of tRNAfMet by VapC results in the generation of tRNA halves and inhibition of protein synthesis.
