Gene ontology analysis of genes with conserved neuron vs. glia methylation differences between mouse and human reveals strong and highly significant enrichments for major neural processes. (A) Genes with conserved neuronal hypermethylation are significantly enriched for glia-specific processes such as glial differentiation, axon ensheathment and immune system functions. (B) Genes with conserved glial hypermethylation are significantly enriched for neuron-related processes such as dendrite development, synaptic transmission and actin filament organization. ‘Enrichment’ is the fold enrichment of the GO term relative to the background set. ‘Q’ represents the P-value of the enrichment corrected for multiple testing by GOrilla.
