Different types of ubiquitylation. Ubiquitin modifications can be classified into three general types, termed monoubiquitylation, multi-monoubiquitylation and polyubiquitylation. Polyubiquitylation can be further subdivided into homotypic ubiquitylation (each ubiquitin chain comprising just one type of ubiquitin linkage) or heterotypic ubiquitylation (containing more than one type of ubiquitin chain). The latter are usually termed hybrid, branched or mixed ubiquitin chains.
