Shown are the numbers of individuals in a subgroup that significantly mastered a particular stimulus class (binomial test, p < 0.01) relative to the total number of individuals (5 for each subgroup). In parentheses, the number of non-reinforced trials used for the calculation (because of a technical problem, one pigeon (P12) had only 272 novel non-reinforced test trials in the non-matching test). The 320 stimuli for the non-matching test class break down into four sets of 80 stimuli: 3A2B, 2A3B, 4A3B and 3A4B. All possible remaining permutations after the four test classes amounted to N = 216.
