Note: Unless indicated otherwise, variables are for lifetime. Readiness to change scores range from 1 = not at all ready, to 10 = definitely ready. Confidence to change scores range from 0 = not at all confident, to 100 = totally confident. Subjective alcohol problem severity was rated on a 5-point scale (Very Major, Major, Minor, Very Minor, Not a Problem). AUDIT = Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (scores range from 0 to 40; a score of ≥8 is suggestive of an alcohol problem; Allen, Fertig, Litten, Sillanaukee, & Anton, 1997).

a

Fisher Exact tests used for categorical variables.

b

t-Test for independent samples (2-tailed) used for quantitative variables; df = 471 unless N < 473.

c

Significant at p = 0.000 (rounded).

d

n = 172.

e

n = 271.

f

n = 443.

g

n = 284.

h

n = 472.

i

90 days prior to seeing the ad.

j

Bonferroni adjustments were made for these last 11 alcohol variables thought to be related a priori.

k

Significant at p ≤ 0.005 level with Bonferroni adjustment to maintain a family wise error rate at α = 0.005 (0.05/11).

l

One standard drink = 14 g of absolute ethanol.
