Excitotoxicity, oxidative damage and neuroinflammatory processes are the main mechanisms of injury (shown as (1)). These mechanisms of injury can independently lead to spectra of neuronal death mechanisms (2), but also feed and potentiate each others effects (3), further exacerbating brain injury.
