Precipitating factors of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation: Potentially reversible factors

  • Uncontrolled pain

  • Electrolytes imbalance (hypokalemia, hypomagnesaemia)

  • Missed medications (beta blockers, calcium channel blockers)

  • Hypoxia (pulmonary embolism; obstructive sleep apnea, atelectasis)

  • Hypotension

  • Infection (sepsis, pneumonia)

  • Severe anemia

  • Hypovolemia, dehydration

  • Worsening heart failure/cardiac ischemia

  • Withdrawal (alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine)

  • Hypothermia

  • Thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism)
