Exponentially growing cultures of R6 strain (a,b) and 48 strain (c,d) were incubated in the absence or in the presence of auranofin alone (a,c) or auranofin-NPs (b,d). Controls with PBS buffer, DMSO or PLGA without auranofin were included. Viable cells were determined on blood agar plates after 6 h of incubation at 37 °C. Data are means of four independent experiments. Error bars represent standard deviations, and asterisks indicate that results are statistically significant compared to the control in the absence of auranofin (one-way ANOVA with a post hoc Dunnet test; *P < 0.01; **P < 0.001).
