Fig. 2 — Molecular mechanisms of induction of aberrant DNA methylation by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. In gastric epithelial cells, EBV is transferred to normal epithelial cells from EBV-infected B lymphocytes. EBV produces multiple viral proteins, including latent membrane protein 2A (LMP2A), which activates STAT3. STAT3 induces increased expression of DNMT1, leading to upregulation at the mRNA and protein levels. Upregulation of DNMT1 by STAT3 induces aberrant DNA methylation of multiple genes, including both driver (shown in blue) and passenger (shown in black) genes
