The rod cell outer segment is responsible for initiating visual signal transduction. It consists of a stack of disk membranes, which are flattened membrane vesicles. The disks are surrounded by the plasma membrane. Light impinges upon the outer segment as indicated by the arrow. Activation of the transduction cascade on the disk membranes culminates in hyperpolarization of the plasma membrane. This is transmitted to the cell synapse.
