mGluR1 or M₁ muscarinic receptors inhibit SK channels, which removes a negative feedback regulation of NMDARs within dendritic spines thereby enhancing Ca²⁺ influx. Facilitated Ca²⁺ influx through NMDARs and Ca²⁺ influx through VSCCs are both required for the induction of LTP by STDP.
